I had to smile as I read that letter. This Tomas might not be the best educated man in the realm, but he knew the proper way to ask for help, I’ll give him that. And it didn’t look like he was panicking, either, at least from the way this was written.

I looked up to Roland, and said, “I believe that we will be needing to post another quest.”

“Right you are, my Lady. I’ll see to it, immediately.”

Chapter 23 – Riding Out

Windwater Barony was not a terribly large or prosperous barony. It could not support an entire standing army of thousands, like you saw in movies. Not with a population of only twelve thousand souls. It was a matter of simple economics. Professional soldiers were people who still needed to eat, but weren’t adding to the food or goods of the population, and there were only so many of those types that the land could support.

Still, it wasn’t like I was without forces at my command. Windwater might not be an extremely wealthy barony, but it still had resources, including manpower. Not counting my party, or the adventurers that might be convinced to come with us, there were the ten members of my household guard, fifty men-at-arms, another sixty split between the four border forts, and the forty members of the town guard for Windwater Towne itself.

Naturally, I couldn’t take all of them with me. Eight members of my household guard would accompany us, leaving two behind to keep watch over the estate. The fifty men-at-arms were available, and I would take them all, but it would take too long to recall the fighters from the border forts, even if the forts could be safely abandoned. Captain Aldous offered members of the town guard, but I instead had him get his men, and start looking at the town’s defenses. It would not do to send all our strength to Stonebreak, only to see the goblins turn aside, and head for Windwater itself, after all. Roland managed to get together twenty-one adventurers to answer the call, including the Ebon Hearts and the guildmaster himself, while another dozen with tracking skills promised to scour the lands to the east, and eliminate any scouts or raiders that might break off from the main group.

With all things said, the next morning Roland joined me at the head of the column as we rode out, eighty-four strong. By the numbers, we were hardly impressive compared to the forces an entire kingdom might bring to bear when it came time for war, and our levels ranged from my paltry 7 to Roland’s 40, but for a force that was gathered in a hurry? Well, it was a fine host to be riding at the head of, to be sure.

As we rode, I considered the skills I had picked up the night before. The levels I’d gotten from fighting the bandits had earned me six skill points to get skills with, after all, and it was best to spend them before I got into another fight.
